Our Practice Origin Story

Johnna Harris, LPC, SEP started creating Dear Self Trauma Therapy when she was an eight- year old girl cycling through counselors faster than last week’s underwear. By the last failed attempt at connecting with a counselor, she determined her future career. She was going to become a counselor, open a private practice, and do this job better than anyone she had ever met.

Johnna’s future desire to help people as a counselor saved her through a tumultuous childhood. After every challenge, she would repeat the same thought to herself,

“I’m going to use this experience to help people one day.”

She could not make sense of anything happening in the moment, but she clung to this belief that one day her suffering would transform into serving others. This childhood belief turned into her life’s purpose. It got her through cancer, ongoing sexual abuse, neglect, rape, traumatic grief, and divorce. She turned a life of pain into a story of hope; a story of resiliency.

Johnna created Dear Self Trauma Therapy for that little girl who felt alone, worthless, and hopeless. She never gave up on her. And she’ll never give up on you.

Our Vision

The vision of Dear Self Trauma Therapy is to create a place where no one has to feel alone; a place where everyone has an empathetic presence.

Our Mission

The mission of Dear Self Trauma Therapy is to provide heart-centered, individualized trauma therapy to all hurting souls seeking healing.

Our Core Values

Safety

We prioritize safety by establishing trust and creating a safe container for healing and growth to occur. Change is not possible when we don’t feel safe. Anyone who has ever felt unsafe knows the value of true safety.

Authenticity

Letting go of who we think we should be and embracing who we really are is essential. Therapy is the place for crying, laughing, cussing, praying, and screaming. Any authentic reaction is welcome here.

Acceptance

True acceptance and belonging are welcome here. Compassion and empathy are demonstrated over judgment and shame.

Integrity

Having the courage to do what is right over what is easy or comfortable. Leaning into vulnerability and uncertainty as we have courageous conversations. We never give up on the fight for healing or the one fighting for it.
